Now more than ever its important to have smoke alarms installed on every level of the home. It is also important to keep the alarms clean and well maintained.  While these alarms are designed to be as maintenance-free as possible there are a few things that you can do to make sure that they work well and have optimal performance.

There are a few general alarm maintenance things to keep in mind. If your alarm is powered by  9 volt or AA batteries, test it once a week. Clean it monthly and the batteries should be replaced at least once a year. The actual unit should be replaced every 10 years.

Testing the alarms also help to make sure that they have a reliable power source. There’s generally a test button on the side or along the top of the unit. Be sure that you have ear protection before pressing the button.

Cleaning the alarms will also ensure that it continues to work well. It’s important to clean the alarms at least once a month by gently vacuuming the outside of the alarm. You can also spray air into the alarm to clear out any dust. You can generally purchase a can of clean compressed air from an office supply store or hardware store.

Cleaning and maintaining our alarm systems is a great way to provide a sense of well-being and safety in our homes.
